Kids are natural do-it-yourselfers. Usually when left on their own, cartons, puzzles, clothes, building blocks, boxes, wrapping paper (…you name it!) take on lives of their own and take the shape of imaginative creatures, storybook characters, dancing fruit and animated automobiles, to name a few.
In this case, my little one wanted to build a cat from her wooden tangram blocks…and not just a cat she said but “a standing up” cat. From her 7-year-old mind and hands, we created this special diy video. All content came from her–from the idea, to the narration down to some of the camera work! All I did were the editing and the captions! (The easiest diy ever).
It was too cute not to share. Hoping this inspires you to create your own kiddie diy videos with your creative l.o.’s.
Oftentimes, us parents feel the need to step in and direct a child’s activities from beginning to end…mindfully guiding them through every step (especially with diy projects!).
Sometimes, stepping back, letting them take the lead and letting their creativity roam freely produces the most amazing results we never could’ve planned.
Mama Tip: Why stop there? Go a step further and let them film their own DIY tutorial! Living in this day and age of digital technology, it wouldn’t be surprising to find that your child is already an expert at filming mini-vlogs (I’m pretty sure you’ve got some on your phone right now. I certainly do!).
Cultivate that creativity and allow them not only to practice speaking to an “audience” (a good skill for public speaking) but also in explaining instructions as well–both useful mental exercises that will serve them the rest of their lives.
Plus, this will certainly make for some fun blooper reels to keep in your precious family archives.
Simple tip: Let your kids take the lead. Give them the raw material, step back and let them create.
