“Me Time” When You’re Needed Full-Time

Escaping for a few precious moments of "Me-Time" with my plant babies

Ever since we were all thrust into lockdown life, the concept of “me time” has become more and more elusive. Prior to this new normal, moms like us had a chance to treat ourselves to a trip to the salon, an afternoon date with friends (while kids were at school), or even just a few precious moments of silence while driving alone.

Now, life basically happens at home for all of us. I’m sure most moms can relate.

But as they say, if there’s a will, there’s a way—with some minor tweaks and intentional adjustments in our routine—a little can go a long way in taking care of ourselves.

Here’s what worked for me—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Turn Up the Volume

Many of the chores around the house are so routine, we can almost do them with our eyes closed.  Use that white space to fill your thoughts with something worthwhile, inspiring, or simply entertaining.

Aside from the fact that listening to songs or podcasts is perfect for mindless chores, it’s also positive input for us—where we can learn a thing or two and even get the chance to have some laughs amidst all the chores.

Tip: Spotify has everything! Music, preaching podcasts to entertaining talk shows are at your fingertips.

The Bathroom, A Sacred Space

The bathroom is more than just functional, it can transform into your own little spa at home.  If you’re like me and your kids or husband don’t bother you at all while you’re in there (I’m blessed, I know), take that opportunity to treat yourself!

A nice body scrub, a face mask for that dewy Korean complexion (yes, it’s possible!), or simply some peace and quiet as you take a nice, long, uninterrupted shower (at least 15 minutes) are definite mom treats!

For the added spa effect, light a scented candle and decorate your bathroom with some pretty indoor plants to put you in the mood for relaxation.

A Low-Maintenance Hobby

Find a hobby or passion that works for you, one you enjoy, and doesn’t feel like a chore. Because who needs more chores, right? Pursuing a hobby sounds like a luxury especially when you’re juggling a million things at home, but the key is to find the right one for you.

For me, it was jumping on the bandwagon of becoming a plant mom myself—watering my plant babies, giving them the right sunlight, and eagerly waiting for once fragile sprouts to eventually become beautiful foliage–adds a sense of accomplishment outside my usual domestic duties.

Not to mention, this simple five-minute routine produces healthy and natural air filters for our home.

Work it Out with Your Buddies

Exercise can be incorporated into your already very busy day.  How?  Involve your family, and you’ll hit two birds with one stone.  You get to take care of your health, get your endorphin fix, and spend time with the ones you love all at once!

I’ve found that I can sneak in some healthy physical activity when my six-year-old and I dance to GoNoodle videos on YouTube. My husband and I also do couple exercises (Juice and Toya and HASFit are favorites) once a week and yes, that’s all thanks to YouTube!

When I work out, I’m doing it for me, and the fact that I get to do it with my husband and son? It’s a total win-win for all of us.

“Me time” doesn’t have to be just a memory.  All we have to do is to be intentional and creative about it.  At the end of the day, the more we take care of ourselves, the more we can give 100% to our families as we nurture them and serve them joyfully.

We hope you can try to sneak in some “me-time” for yourselves, mom, you certainly deserve it!
